Player Tags

Create custom, color-coded labels for your league and assign them to players — where tag definitions live, how to assign them, and who can see the private notes behind them.

Player Tags

Overview

Player Tags let an Operator create custom, color-coded labels for a league — things like "Beginner," "Team Captain," or "Needs Follow-up" — and attach them to individual players. Tags are freeform: you choose the name, an optional description, a color, and an optional icon. They're organizational only — they don't affect scoring, handicaps, or eligibility anywhere else in the app.

Two things are worth knowing up front. Tag badges are public: they show in the player tables that everyone with access to the league can see, guests included on a public league. Tag notes are not: the per-tag note an Operator writes when assigning a tag is visible only to Operators and SuperAdmins. So the name goes on the badge, and anything private goes in the note.

Tags are per-league. A tag you create in one league isn't available in another, and tags aren't available at all in Organization mode (the players view scoped to an organization rather than a single league).

There are two separate steps to using tags, in two different places:

  1. Define the tags your league can use — their name, color, and icon.
  2. Assign one or more of those tags to a specific player.

Defining Tags

Tag definitions are managed from the Maintain Tags button on the Players page (/operator/players), sitting just left of Add Player. This opens a list of every tag currently defined for the league, where you can:

  • Create New Tag — set a name (required), an optional description, a color (pick a preset swatch or enter any hex value), and an optional icon from a fixed set of emoji icons (⭐ 👑 🔥 🚀 🏆 💎 🎯 ⚡ 🛡️ 🏅 💍 🚩). A live preview shows the badge as it will appear before you save.
  • Edit an existing tag's name, description, color, or icon using the pencil icon on its card.
  • Delete a tag using the trash icon. Deleting a tag removes it from every player it was assigned to — this can't be undone, and the confirmation prompt says so.

Maintain Tags only manages the catalog of tags for the league — it doesn't assign anything to a specific player.

Assigning Tags to a Player

Tags are assigned one player at a time, from that player's own record. Open a player's details (from the Players page) and look for the Tags section near the bottom of the form — it's only shown when editing an existing player who already has a record in the current league (not while adding a brand-new player).

From there:

  • Use the Assign Tags multi-select to pick any number of the league's defined tags. Deselecting a tag removes it from the player.
  • Each tag you select gets its own Notes box underneath, for recording why that particular tag was assigned — useful for tags like "Needs Follow-up" where the reason matters. Notes are optional and are saved per tag, so two tags on the same player can carry different notes.
  • Save the player as usual to persist the tag assignments and their notes.

Notes you've already saved are loaded back into these boxes, so you can read and revise them later. Unlike the badges themselves, notes are visible only to Operators and SuperAdmins — see Who Can Do What below.

If the league has no tags defined yet, this section tells you so and points you back to Maintain Tags to create some first.

Where Tags Show Up

Tags appear in two places, both as a Tags column showing up to three badges per player (color and icon included), with a "+N more" label when a player has more than three:

  • The Players page table (/operator/players).
  • The Player stats table on the league Dashboard.

Neither is hidden behind an extra click, and neither is restricted to Operators — anyone who can open those tables sees the badges. That includes players and team captains on both tables, and, on a public league, signed-out guests on the Dashboard. Keep that in mind when naming a tag: put anything you'd rather keep private in the tag's notes, not in its name.

If a tag has a note for that player, an Operator can hover (or tap) the badge to read it. Everyone else just sees the badge — the note is never sent to their browser at all.

Who Can Do What

ActionOperatorTeam CaptainPlayerGuest (public league)
See tag badges on the Players page
See tag badges on the Dashboard player stats
Read the notes behind a tag
Open Maintain Tags (create/edit/delete tag definitions)
Assign or remove tags on a player, and write notes

Tag badges are public: they're part of the player tables everyone can already see. Guests don't reach the Players page at all, but they do see the Dashboard on a public league. Managing tags — defining them, assigning them, and reading or writing their notes — is Operator/SuperAdmin-only. Tags aren't available at all in Organization mode.

SuperAdmins have the same tag access as Operators throughout.

Where the Controls Live

  • Players page → Maintain Tags (/operator/players) — create, edit, and delete tag definitions for the current league. The button is left of Add Player, and appears only when you're scoped to a league, since tags are per-league.
  • Players page → open a player → Tags section — assign or remove tags for that one player, and write a note per tag.
  • Players table → Tags column and Dashboard → Player stats → Tags column — read-only view of each player's assigned tags; hover a badge as an Operator to read its note.

Common Questions

Why can't I find tags when I'm viewing Organization players? Tags are scoped to a single league, so they're turned off entirely in the organization-wide players view. Switch to a specific league to use them.

Why don't I see a Tags section when adding a brand-new player? Tag assignment only appears once a player has been saved and has a record in the current league — save the new player first, then reopen their details to assign tags.

What happens to a player's tag assignments if I delete the tag itself? The tag is removed from every player who had it. This happens immediately on delete and can't be undone, which is why the delete confirmation calls it out explicitly.

Do tags affect scoring, handicaps, or eligibility? No. Tags are purely organizational — a color-coded label for your own reference. They don't feed into scoring, standings, or any handicap calculation.

Can players or team captains see tags? They can see the badges. The Tags column is part of the player tables everyone with access to the league can already see, and on a public league that includes guests who aren't signed in. What they can't do is create, assign, or remove tags, or read the notes behind them — all of that is Operator/SuperAdmin-only.

Where do I read the note someone wrote on a tag? Two places, both Operator-only: hover (or tap) the tag badge in a player table to see its note, or open the player's details and look at the Notes box under each assigned tag in the Tags section.

Can a player see the note I wrote about them? No. Notes are stripped out before the player's record ever reaches a non-Operator's browser, so they aren't visible in the app and can't be recovered from the page either.
